The moment it happens

Speed is everything. Blot — don't rub — with clean white towels or paper towels, pressing firmly to wick up as much as possible. Rubbing spreads the stain and damages fibers. Keep blotting with fresh towels until no more moisture transfers. For urine, stand on the towels: your weight pushes them deeper where the liquid went.

Then treat with an enzyme cleaner made for pet stains — not general carpet cleaner, not vinegar, not bleach. Enzyme cleaners contain bacteria that digest the urine compounds. Saturate the area (it needs to reach as deep as the urine did), cover with a damp towel, and let it work for the time the label says. Then blot dry.

What NOT to do

Don't use steam or hot water on a fresh stain you haven't treated — heat can set protein stains permanently. Don't use bleach or harsh chemicals — they damage carpet dye and can make things worse. Don't use a regular carpet cleaner with optical brighteners on pet stains — it just hides them temporarily. And don't assume the smell is gone because you can't smell it — your pet's nose is far better than yours, and they'll return to spots you think are clean.

The products that actually work

Enzyme-based pet stain removers are the real deal — look for "enzyme" or "bio-enzymatic" on the label. They need time (often hours) and moisture to work; rushing them wastes the product. For the smell between treatments, baking soda sprinkled on the dry area, left for hours, then vacuumed, helps absorb odor — it's a deodorizer, not a cleaner, but it's useful.

When DIY isn't enough

Call a professional when: the smell keeps returning (it's in the pad), the stain is old and set, there are multiple spots you can't fully map, or a pet keeps returning to the same area. Our UV inspection finds every spot, enzyme treatment breaks down deep contamination, and subsurface extraction flushes the pad — the full solution DIY can't reach.

Don't feel bad about calling. Pet stains are our most common job, and the sooner we treat them, the better the outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does vinegar work on pet urine?

It helps with fresh surface odor but doesn't break down the urine compounds deep in carpet and pad. It's a decent emergency measure, not a solution. Enzyme cleaners do the real work.

Why does my dog keep peeing in the same spot?

Because they can still smell the old accident — it's a scent marker. Proper enzyme treatment removes the marker and usually breaks the cycle. Persistent remarking can also signal a health issue worth a vet visit.

Can old pet stains ever come out?

Often, yes — even old ones respond to professional enzyme treatment and extraction. Stains that have chemically dyed the fibers may lighten rather than vanish. We assess honestly before quoting.
