Rule one: blot, don't rub

This is the single most important thing in this guide. Rubbing spreads the spill wider and grinds it deeper into fibers — and it can permanently distort carpet texture. Blotting lifts the spill up and out. Press a clean white cloth or paper towel firmly onto the spill, lift, repeat with a fresh section. Keep going until nothing transfers. For large spills, stand on the towels — your weight wicks moisture from deep in the carpet.

Rule two: act fast, but stay calm

Most spills are very fixable in the first minutes and increasingly permanent with time. But panic causes mistakes — grabbing bleach, scrubbing wildly, pouring random cleaners. Take ten seconds, get white towels, and blot methodically. Speed with calm beats frantic every time.

Rule three: know what NOT to grab

No bleach — it removes carpet dye along with the stain, leaving a worse spot. No hot water on protein stains (blood, milk, eggs) — heat sets them permanently; use cool water. No colored towels or printed paper towels — the dye transfers. No scrubbing brushes on delicate carpet — you'll fuzz the fibers. And no mixing cleaners — chemical reactions can set stains or damage carpet.

Common spills, specific moves

Red wine: blot immediately, then cover with table salt or baking soda to draw out moisture — vacuum when dry, then blot with cool water and a drop of dish soap. Coffee: blot, then cool water with a tiny bit of dish soap, blotting from outside in. Grease: scrape up solids, apply baking soda to absorb oil, vacuum, then a small amount of dish soap solution blotted in. Pet urine: blot thoroughly, then enzyme cleaner saturated to the depth of the accident — see our pet stain guide. Ink: blot, then dab with rubbing alcohol on a cloth (test first) — ink is tough; don't overwork it.

When to stop and call us

Stop DIY efforts when: the stain isn't improving after a couple of careful attempts (overworking sets stains), the spill is large, it's pet urine that's more than fresh (it's in the pad), or the carpet is wool, silk, or another delicate fiber. At that point, professional treatment gives the best outcome — and the less you've done to it, the better we can do.

There's no shame in calling. We'd rather treat a fresh spill than a set stain, and quick professional response saves more carpets than any home remedy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the one thing most people do wrong?

Rubbing instead of blotting. It's instinctive and it's destructive — it spreads the stain and damages fibers. Blot, lift, repeat.

Are store-bought stain removers okay?

Some are fine for fresh spills; many contain optical brighteners that just hide stains temporarily or residues that attract dirt. For anything beyond a simple fresh spill, enzyme or professional treatment works better.

How fast do I need to act?

Minutes matter. A spill blotted immediately often leaves no trace; the same spill left overnight can become permanent. Keep white towels and an enzyme cleaner accessible — preparation beats panic.
