The dirtiest thing in your bedroom
Think about it: you spend seven or eight hours a night on your mattress. Every night. For years. In that time it collects sweat, body oils, dead skin, dust mites, and whatever else comes along. The average mattress doubles in weight over a decade — and most of that added weight is things you don't want to think about.
Tampa makes it worse. Our humidity is a paradise for dust mites — microscopic creatures that thrive in warm, damp bedding and whose waste triggers allergies and asthma. If you wake up congested, sneezy, or itchy, and it clears up after you've been up a while, your mattress is a prime suspect.
And unlike sheets, you can't throw a mattress in the wash. Vacuuming the surface barely scratches it. Professional mattress cleaning extracts what's deep inside — the allergens, the odors, the buildup of years.
What's actually in your mattress
Dust mites, by the millions in an older mattress. They feed on dead skin and their droppings are a major allergen — the number one trigger for year-round allergy symptoms for many people. Sweat and body oils, absorbed night after night, which yellow the mattress and feed odor. Dead skin cells — the average person sheds enough to feed a thriving mite population. And then the visible stuff: stains from spills, accidents, kids, pets, and life.
None of this means you're dirty. It's just what happens when humans sleep on things. But it does mean your mattress needs periodic deep cleaning, same as your carpet.
Our mattress cleaning process
We start with a thorough vacuuming using HEPA-filtered equipment — capturing the fine allergens instead of blowing them into your bedroom air. Then we treat stains individually: sweat stains, urine, blood, food spills — each gets the right chemistry.
Next, we apply an anti-allergen treatment that neutralizes dust mite allergens on contact. Then the deep clean: controlled hot water extraction that flushes contaminants out of the mattress without over-wetting it. Moisture control is critical here — a soggy mattress in Tampa humidity is a mildew risk, so we use minimal moisture and maximum extraction.
Finally, speed-drying. We ensure strong airflow around and under the mattress so it dries fully and fast — usually within a few hours. We also deodorize, leaving the mattress smelling fresh, not perfumed.
Stains and odors
Sweat stains — the yellow kind — are the most common and usually lighten dramatically. Urine (kids, pets, older adults) gets enzyme treatment like our carpet pet service. Blood, food, and drink spills each get targeted treatment. We'll assess honestly: most mattress stains improve significantly, though very old set-in stains may lighten rather than vanish.
Odors respond very well to cleaning. That stale, musty mattress smell is usually dust mites, sweat buildup, and humidity — all things deep cleaning addresses directly. Many clients say their bedroom smells different (better) the first night after.
How often
Once a year is a good baseline for most households. Allergy and asthma sufferers benefit from twice a year — the difference in morning symptoms can be remarkable. After illness, after a pet has been sleeping on the bed, or when moving into a new place with a used mattress: clean it. And always use a quality waterproof mattress protector after cleaning — it's cheap insurance that keeps the mattress clean far longer.
Kids' and guest mattresses
Kids' mattresses take special abuse — accidents, spills, and everything else childhood involves. Guest room mattresses often go years without attention while collecting dust in Tampa's humid air. When we come for your main mattress, adding the others is quick and cost-effective. A clean guest bed is also just good hospitality.
Don't forget the box spring and pillows
The mattress gets all the attention, but the box spring or foundation underneath collects dust and allergens too — it just hides them better. We vacuum and treat the foundation as part of a thorough mattress service. Pillows are the other forgotten item: they absorb sweat and oils nightly and harbor dust mites just like mattresses. Pillows should be replaced every year or two, but in between, professional cleaning extends their life and keeps them healthier. Ask us to include them when you book.
